Odds & Ends

Plain portfolio front.

I’m traveling in New York City and having a great time.  Today it snowed around 8 inches!  Very beautiful.

When I asked one of my daughters how she liked my blogs, she said she liked them but wondered what they have to do with leather and hand made stuff.  Great question!

The honest answer is that they have very little to do with leatherwork (so far…).  Given the name of my site and the apparent reason for the blog, perhaps an explanation is in order:

The bottom line is that I have not had a very direct path in life.  It all makes perfect sense to me, but it might not be completely obvious how I transitioned from hockey player who does poorly in high school to builder of house in woods to getting married to my sweetheart at a much too early age (at least now that I’m a father of young adult kids) to saddle maker to father at a much too early age (at least …) to an art major to a chemistry major to a biophysics PhD to a job in a major research university…

One of my biggest concerns is that we seem to live in a world now where developing a career on a less-than-obvious path is discouraged.  I think that makes things very hard for young people, and the main reason for this blog and my site is to show them at least one alternative to going straight through nursery school through postdoc or residency without stopping to “smell the roses”…
